LT Buchanan was born in Gilbert, AZ. He spent most of his life growing up in Oregon. He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and was commissioned through the NROTC program at Oregon State University in 2020. After completing the nuclear power pipeline, LT Buchanan reported to the USS Nevada (SSBN 733) out of Bangor, WA.  

LT Buchanan served as the Reactor Control Assistant, overseeing the operations of the division responsible for reactor control and protection systems. In 2023 he took over as the Damage Control Assistant, responsible for critical life support and damage control systems on board. He finished his tour on Nevada as the ship’s Quality Assurance Officer ensuring the ship met stringent maintenance procedures to keep her operating at sea and performing the DOD’s Strategic Deterrence mission.

LT Buchanan reported to the University of Arizona NROTC in July of 2025 where he serves as the Submarine Officer and Nuclear Power Officer preparing midshipmen to commission as Ensigns in the United States Navy.
