National Scholarship
General Information
The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Program was established to educate and train young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Naval Reserve or Marine Corps Reserve. The largest single source of Navy and Marine Corps officers, the NROTC Program fills a vital need in preparing mature, young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps. Students interested in joining the NROTC program may apply for the four year National Scholarship or join as a College Program student. Four year scholarship selectees are appointed as Midshipmen, U.S. Naval Reserve, by the Secretary of the Navy and are granted compensation and benefits authorized by law for four years of undergraduate study. Under certain conditions, midshipmen may become eligible for up to one additional year of scholarship compensation and benefits. Students selected for the NROTC Scholarship Program make their own arrangements for college enrollment and room and board, and take the normal course load required by the college or university for degree completion. Use the link below to go to the NROTC homepage where you can apply for the National Scholarship. The deadline to apply for the four year National Scholarship is January 31st of the expected enrollment year for a Fall semester, e.g. January 31, 2020 for Fall 2020.
Preferred Majors
Naval Training Commands break up academic majors into three tiers:
- TIER ONE MAJORS are engineering/technical majors deemed desirable by the Navy and include: aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, systems engineering and electrical engineering.
- TIER TWO MAJORS are other technical majors to include: math, physics, chemistry, etc.
- TIER THREE MAJORS are all non-technical majors.
To put it plainly, if you select a technical major, you are more likely to get a NROTC scholarship. There is a catch. Your scholarship is attached to the degree you select. If you move down in degree tier after receiving a scholarship, you might lose your scholarship.
Benefits
The four-year scholarship provides FULL tuition and educational fees, a stipend for textbooks, all uniforms, and a subsistence allowance each academic month. Scholarship midshipmen also embark on summer training during all three Summers while in the program.
Midshipman on Scholarship currently receive the following stipends:
Freshman: $250
Sophomores: $300
Juniors: $350
Seniors: $400
All Year Groups: Textbook Stipend of $375/semester
Unaffiliated college students (college students not currently enrolled in NROTC) may apply to three and two year scholarships, which provides all the same benefits as the National Scholarship. College Program students are automatically considered for the the three or two year scholarship (whichever is applicable) every summer. Requirements for applicants include having between 30 to 120 semester hours, a minimum college GPA of 2.5 out of 4.0, and admittance (or be in the process of admittance) to the University of Arizona or Pima Community College. Please contact the NROTC Recruiting Officer, or Marine Officer Instructor for Marine Option, to apply. Deadline to apply for the three and two year scholarships are May 31st prior to attendance in the Fall, e.g. May 31, 2020 for Fall 2020.
